Frequently asked questions
Is Gerupuk suitable for beginners?
Yes, Gerupuk Bay has a range of surf breaks catering to a variety of levels, including beginners! If you come surfing with CTRL, we’ll help select the most appropriate waves for your skill level and ensure you have fun while staying safe in the water.
What do I need to bring to a surf lesson?
For your surf lesson, you’ll need to bring a swimsuit, sunscreen (including zinc, as the sun can be strong!), and a towel. Don’t worry about surfboards—we provide them, along with rash guards. Since we take a boat to the surf spot, it’s handy to bring a small waterproof bag to keep your essentials safe, though it’s not essential.
Where can I find you?
We currently do not have a surf shop, so we operate directly from our house in the centre of Gerupuk. Look out for the Kai Kai Homestay sign and turn in there.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We’re very flexible, but we recommend booking at least a day in advance. This gives us time to organize the best surf spot and time for your skill level, and to bring in additional instructors if you’re part of a larger group. The earlier you book, the better we can ensure everything runs smoothly for your lesson!
When’s the best season to surf in Lombok?
Indonesia has two main seasons: the wet season (November to April) and the dry season (May to October).
During the wet season, we typically experience west winds, which are perfect for the waves in Lombok. These winds create offshore conditions for most of the day, resulting in glassy, ideal surfing conditions.
However, surfing is possible year-round in Gerupuk! While the dry season (May to October) brings stronger winds, which can affect wave quality and make conditions less optimal, you can still catch some great waves. The key difference is that the wet season generally offers more consistent, favorable wind for smoother surf conditions.
